SAE 85W90 transmission oil from ADDINOL
SAE Class 85W90 transmission oils consist of high-quality base oils combined with an effective phosphorus-sulphur additive package. 85W90 transmission oils are characterized by a high load carrying capacity, which enables them to be used in heavy machinery.
The 85W90 transmission oils are designed for the following applications:
- Suitable for lubrication of hypoid axle drives with high loads and low or high axle misalignment
- Suitable for steering and transfer gearboxes in motor vehicles and working machines
- Can be used for transfer cases, intermediate and secondary gears in motor vehicles and working machines
- Suitable for synchronized or non-synchronized manual transmissions
85W90 transmission oils comply with API GL-4 or API GL-5 specifications. Use our Oilfinder to check if SAE 85W90 oil is suitable for your gear.

SAE 85W90 meaning
85W90 stands for the SAE class for which the transmission oil has been classified. This classification is made by the Society of Automotive Engineers. In the case of multigrade oil, the flow properties of the oil at certain temperatures are particularly important in this context. The value before the "W" (W=winter suitability) indicates the flowability of the oil at cold temperatures. Transmission oils with 85W remain flowable up to -12 °C. The number "90" refers to the kinematic viscosity of the gear oil at 100 °C. This comprises a range of 13.5 - 18.4 mm²/s. The oil has a high shear stability and can withstand high loads in the gearbox.
Transmission oil 85W90 or 80W90?
The operating instructions defines which transmission oil can be filled into your commercial vehicle. If you have the option of choosing between 85W90 or 80W90, it depends entirely on the area of application of the vehicle. 85W90 is only flowable down to -12 °C, 80W90 on the other hand down to -26 °C. If your vehicle is regularly exposed to very cold temperatures, we recommend 80W90 transmission oil, otherwise 85W90 can also be filled in. The performance parameters of the oils of both SAE classes are identical in many respects. Therefore, only the low temperature operating range is decisive for the choice of the oil.
