HVLP 46 hydraulic oil is used as a pressure fluid in modern hydraulic systems. It is particularly useful for use in systems that are exposed to strongly fluctuating temperatures. These include outdoor installations such as barriers, scrap presses, locks and weir plants. It must withstand high thermal loads and minimize wear under severe conditions such as shock loads.

The designation HVLP 46 is composed of "HVLP" and "46". HVLP are the code letters of the hydraulic fluid, which are defined in DIN 51524-3. The number 46 is due to the kinematic viscosity of the hydraulic oil (in mm²/s) at 40 degrees Celsius. The respective viscosity classes were standardized by ISO VG.

HVLP 46 properties

The HVLP 46 hydraulic oils are characterised by the following properties:

HVLP 46 difference to HLP 46

Hydraulic oils classified as HVLP differ from oils classified as HLP primarily in their outstanding viscosity-temperature behaviour. This means that oils with the HVLP designation can be used in outdoor installations and can even withstand large temperature fluctuations. The viscosity index for ADDINOL HLP 46 oil is about 118, whereas the viscosity index for HVLP 46 is 172. The pour point of HVLP 46 ranges down to -39 °C. HLP 46 reaches a value of -30 °C only. HVLP 46 is therefore much more resistant to cold than HLP 46 and can be used in winter sports areas, cold stores and freezers without any problems.

In general, the optimum operating temperature varies greatly between oil types. An HLP 46 is typically used at temperatures from -20 °C to 90 °C, whereas HVLP can be used from -35 °C to 120 °C. This makes HVLP much more resilient even under heat.

HVLP 46 viscosity

The viscosity of HVLP 46 is limited by the ISO VG (International Organization for Standardization Viscosity Grade) viscosity class. This describes that the kinematic viscosity of the hydraulic oil at 40 °C must be between 41.4 and 50.6 mm²/s. The centre point viscosity is therefore located at 46 mm²/s. Oil of the ISO VG class 46 has approximately the flow behaviour like olive oil at room temperature. It can therefore be regarded as comparatively thin. The ISO VG classes range from 2 (very thin) to 1500 (high viscous).
